What the Cape Town stadium looks like from my home on February 1 2010

Back to blogging a little later then expected,
since I came back with the flu and am still not recovered
and not strong enough to go outside yet

Hamiltons Rugby club has started to prepare for the 2010 CT Tens.

I took this on Jan 18 the night before I left for Egypt
all 360 spotlights of the "Ring of fire" were blazing away,
A rarity nowadays, since  most nights the stadium is quite dark

Misty aerial night shot of new World Cup Stadium in Cape Town from Table Mountain

It was 7.30  pm by the time I was on Table Mountain
It was cloudy and grey the city was lying in a haze
but  I was there to shoot the lights so wasn't that fazed by it, enjoying the view tremendously I always feel so alive when I am up there :) but by the time it was dark to my dismay it started drizzling as well,
however it did give an eery feeling to my photos ...
by the time I was ready shooting it was 9 PM

and when I turned to go home this is what Table Mountain looked like
Do not worry I had an armed guard with me yet even so... I walked fast
to get to my car !
More tomorrow...

Cape Town Stadium the closest I can get without jumping right in

I wonder what the view is like from those seats near the "port holes"
or whatever you call those openings to the outside, it must be amazing

Click on images to see large version
BTW the green lights in the foreground are really that green
and the reason the roof is not blue like here
is that only the inside lights were on and not the 350 spotlights in the roof which make up the "Ring of fire "

You have no idea how annoyed I get when the photo is blown out like here ..
so anyway the well lit :) white road is the new Granger Bay Boulevard which gives access to the stadium
that is where I stood when I took these shots (the last 2 images)

And this is a close up of the V&A Waterfront
it is very busy now with  tourists from other parts of South Africa and abroad
Note the Aqua Festival sign, you can see the seating area and the floating platform

An aerial view of 2010 World Cup Cape Town Stadium which was recently hit by theft

Apparently the PVC mesh sheets were torn last weekend during the storm due to theft of aluminum "caps" which attach the PVC sheets to the facade read more here
and the thieving headache here

The stadium is practically ready but not quite...There is still a snag list to attend to + the 4 torn sheets and other small details still need finishing touches The pitch also still needs a few weeks of growth before it's ready for its opening game on January 23 2009 when Ajax Cape Town take on Santos.

This evening while I was shooting on Signal Hill, I met the owner of the cherry picker company (the small serving platforms you see on the right in the photo)
He asked me if I had ever been inside I said No I had not.
He promised me to ask his site manager to contact me via my e mail adress
Capetown_sa@yahoo.co.uk and he would then take me
So please keep your fingers crossed for me !
I would love to go up on the roof to shoot !

Also today.... the colours were so beautiful I couldn't resist posting this

Seen many times before but I get never tired of it I hope you do not either isn't it awesome ?
Look at it this way My blog is like a webcamera
except that it is not able to stream :)

I took this shot before I went up Signal Hill this evening
the famous Tablecloth was just forming, it was such a beautiful evening
and such special light

World Cup 2010 Green Point Stadium Flood lights switched on October 22

Scroll down and see how the evening progresses...
Just before 7 oclock
After a hot windless day and a big fire in Milnerton, the air was thick and hazy with smog, as you can see it hanging around the hills in the far distance and so the sunset was a watery affair

The row of lights underneath the roof which had just been switched on

7.10 Pm Its the first time I see these lights on at the edge
as the evening progresses more and more of these edge lights are switched on and I am like a jack in the box
Jumping between my camera and my laptop
Each time when I look up from my editing, I see the stadium and they keep switching on and off different lights which I then try and capture
There were many tourist boats staying close to see the lights
The Catamaran is the Tigresse

7.20 PM

7.34 PM

The light changes fast and the stadium is looking beautiful

7.50 PM

8.01 PM

and then there are suddenly green lights too  at 8.02 PM

Blazing away

9.16 Notice the edge of the roof more and more lights are switched on

10.32
Its now past midnight and it still looks more or less like this
Goodnight from me in Cape Town

Testing the roof "Ring of fire" of the 2010 World Cup Green Point Stadium in Cape Town

The lights were switched on for the first time tonight It is extremely bright
not easy to capture since the middlle part kept being blown out whatever setting I used

A close up click images You can clearly see the seats

Trying to avoid the flare of the light

It is an amazing sight but there is allot of light polution which I thought that wouldn't be the case but then they are not finnished yet

The view to the West last night

Footnote on Oct 21
I am sure allot of Green Point people didn't realise the lights were on

I drove past the back (Atlantic side) at 9 PM and saw nothing out of the ordinary
when I drove up to my house I almost died at seeing the sight of the all lit up stadium
at first I immediately stopped my car to start shooting ... my cam and my tripod are always with me ..
I was so afraid they would switch them off before I was able to capture it :) but for safety reasons I drove home and although
I had not had dinner yet either I dropped everything and started shooting

Of course it then takes a few hours to choose and edit the photos
by the time I went to bed it was well after midnight but the lights were still blazing
When I closed the curtains I saw smoke coming off the roof and thought; OMG its not on fire ?

So again I whipped out my camera to shoot but that was all..... just clouds of smoke from time to time, no flames.Haven't seen or edited those images yet
